Congratulations to senior wrestler Nathan Murphy, who broke the school's records for most pins in a season this past week. The record was 38, and Nathan is sitting at 40 with more to come!

This year's gold tier finish capped off another successful season for our nation’s future Cybersecurity Defenders. Congratulation to our team: Nathaniel Collins, Garrett Kaminske, Paloka Ljucovic, Alyssa Mitchell, Jeffery Sherbutte, and Makayla White. If you are interested in computers and computer security, we are actively recruiting for next year's team. Please email Mr. Cornwell (rcornwell@cvs.k12.mi.us) for more information.

Today's Black History Month announcement is from Ms. Brooks: Hired in 1956 as a mathematician at the U.S. Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia, Dr. Gladys West was one of the first Black women to work at the facility. During her 42-year Navy career, she programmed high-performance computers to process satellite data. Without this accurate modeling, GPS technology would be unable to provide the reliable, real-time positioning data we use today known as GPS. Her contributions remained largely classified and unrecognized for decades until she was finally honored as a pioneer of the Global Positioning System. She recently passed away on January 17, 2026, at the age of 95.

Today's Black History Month announcement is from Ms. Mattia: Ron "Schoolboy" Teasley was among the first wave of African American players signed to the major leagues after Jackie Robinson broke the racial barrier. He was also a standout in the Negro National Leagues. With his recent death at the age of 99, it is believed that now there may just be one living veteran left of the Negro Leagues. Teasley signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. He got the tryout after excelling at Detroit's Northwestern High School and in college at Wayne State University, where he still holds a batting record. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/04/nx-s1-5699396/pioneering-african-american-baseball-player-ron-teasley-has-died-at-99 If you have a Black History Month event, accomplishment, or quote to share, please send it to me.

Announcements – Friday, February 6, 2026

Today's Black History Month announcement is from building sub, Ms. Wilson:

Did you know boxer Joe Louis was an avid equestrian? He owned and operated Spring Hill Farm in Shelby Township from 1939-1944. At a time of significant racial segregation, Joe Louis organized all-Black horse shows at his facility to open doors to the talented African American horsemen who were barred from participating in most competitions. While the facility in Shelby Twp no longer exists, there is a plan to see Joe Louis’ equestrian legacy live on by incorporating horseback riding trails into the coming greenway through the heart of Detroit that will bear his name. If you have a Black History Month event, accomplishment, or quote to share, please send it to me.

Announcements – Thursday, February 5, 2026

Today's Black History Month announcement comes from evening custodian, Mr. Kubiac:Henry O. Flipper was the first African American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the first Black commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. He was born into slavery in Georgia in 1856 and gained his freedom after the Civil War. Nominated to West Point in 1873, Flipper faced intense racism, social isolation, and harassment from fellow cadets but persevered and graduated in 1877. Despite competent service, he was court-martialed in 1882 on charges related to alleged financial misconduct. He was acquitted of embezzlement but convicted of “conduct unbecoming an officer” and dismissed from the Army—charges many historians consider racially motivated and in 1976: Posthumously pardoned by President Gerald Ford. Flipper is remembered as a pioneer who broke racial barriers in the U.S. military and demonstrated resilience in the face of systemic discrimination. Announcements – Wednesday, February 4, 2026

Today's Black History Month announcement was shared by Derek Verdezoto:

Jackie Robinson was a trailblazing American baseball player who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947 when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African American to play in the modern MLB. Despite facing intense racism, hostility from fans, and discrimination from opponents and even teammates, Robinson played with extraordinary skill, courage, and dignity. He went on to win the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1947, the MVP award in 1949, and helped lead the Dodgers to six World Series appearances, winning one championship in 1955. Beyond his athletic success, Robinson’s impact reached far beyond baseball. His bravery and perseverance helped advance the civil rights movement and paved the way for greater racial equality in professional sports and American society. If you have a Black History Month event, accomplishment, or quote to share, please send it to me.
